Based on an anonymized composite of registrant profiles. The archetype matches 15-20% of current registrants and is the single closest match to your audience. Name changed to Jamie Chen for classroom use.

The Case

Background:

Jamie Chen, 39, Chinese-American, Bay Area. Laid off in March 2026 after 8 years doing UX / product operations at a big tech company. Two kids at home (4 and 7), spouse is an accountant, household expenses run $12K a month.

Present state:

  • Identity: mid-transition — done being a corporate cog
  • AI experience: asks ChatGPT questions regularly, but has never written code or touched an API
  • Runway: severance + savings cover 8 months
  • Emotional state: sends resumes by day, doom-scrolls by night; the feed is an endless parade of AI-startup success stories

Jamie's voice:

"I got laid off, and I'm thinking about doing something of my own.

I don't want to go back to being a big-tech cog — that fate has already proven unstable. I want to build something of mine with AI, but I don't know where to start.

I have a few fuzzy ideas:

  1. An AI assistant for Chinese-immigrant moms — I'm in the mom groups myself, and every day I watch everyone ask the same questions (school applications, picking after-school programs, kids' mental health). Feels like AI could help.

  2. An AI job-search coach for laid-off engineers — I'm the target user myself, and 8 years inside big tech taught me exactly how a resume should be packaged.

  3. An AI operations consultant for small businesses — I have 8 years of product-operations experience and could help local Chinese-owned small businesses save time and money with AI.

I have some feeling for all three but can't pick one. Or should I just keep dutifully sending resumes and find a job?

My family doesn't really support me starting a company — too risky, they say. I have two young kids to feed. But every day of resume-sending breaks my heart a little more — every reply says 'we're hiring people who know AI.' I feel like building something is the way out, but I have no idea how to begin.
